Ending The Poverty Blues

One of the most important claims that the friends of the blue social model make is that it addresses the needs of the poor and the weak better than any other existing social system. This is a serious point that blue critics sometimes don’t think enough about, but the claim is more questionable than blues admit — and more to the point, from where we are today, the basic methods of the old social model aren’t likely to make things much better.

Social conditions in early 20th century America were genuinely appalling. A lack of basic public health in some places meant unnecessary deaths from infectious disease; child labor in factories and mines was still widespread. Industrial workers faced killing hours in dangerous and polluted factories. Poorly packaged and preserved food was sold without any kind of check. Most kids got at most an eighth grade education; old people who could no longer work were often left destitute. Those who were crippled or disabled often were left to their own resources. Given the widespread discrimination against women, families whose fathers were no longer present were often in terrible want. Poor people did not get fat from bad nutrition in those days; they grew gaunt from hunger.

Racial conditions were barbaric; brutal lynchings were commonplace in parts of the South. Interracial marriage was banned by law in many states, race discrimination was enforced by law, and courts routinely sentenced African-American defendants to hard labor on minimal grounds. Read more..........

From the comments, on downturns, fiscal policy, and multiple equilibria

We were less wealthy than we thought we were.

Call me an AD-denier, but I still think the basic issue here is that you can’t consume more than you produce. Production exists to satisfy demand, but at the same time demand is limited by production. We had a long boom built on the notion we could boost demand and thus supply and thus demand again in a virtuous cycle, and now we are seeing the cycle work in reverse as demand/supply seek their natural levels.

One way to justify this model is in terms of multiple equilibria, and that we have been walking (bouncing our heads?) back down the escalator. Arguably for the United States this downward bouncing is over. Along the way we are sending signals about the quality of our institutions and thus shaping the course of the future.

In this model there is still a useful role for fiscal policy. For one thing, fiscal policy can smooth that ride down the escalator, by spreading the losses out over time, at the cost of future debt of course. This may be needed if only to make the political economy of decline less bitter; see Spain and Greece. Nonetheless fiscal policy cannot make up for the output losses at will. We are not standing in an IS-LM diagram where the difference between “what we have” and “what we could have” is thwarted only by some supposed Austerians who won’t shift the proper curve and yet somehow have taken over some of the biggest spending social democratic, insider-leaning governments in world history. The IS-LM approach fits in nicely with the view that policy improvement is all about yakking about the obstructionists. Instead, policy is also about rebuilding trust, not just maintaining ngdp on a decent keel. Read more......

Buying Responsibly: Americans Talk A Better Game Than They Play

Ask Americans if they are willing to spend more to buy American-made products, and nearly half say they are often willing to do this. But in the latest Economist/YouGov Poll, the country where a product is made trails price, quality, and even convenience, as an important factor in consumer decision-making. The public gives even less importance to a product’s brand, its impact on the environment, or the political leanings of the company that produces it.

Republicans are especially price-sensitive, as are those with incomes below $100,000 a year. Those with incomes over $100,000 are far more likely to say quality (92%) is important than to say price is, though 58% of them also say price matters. More conservatives than liberals and more older adults than younger ones say where a product is made is very important.

Most Americans — whether Republican, Democrat or independent — say they don’t care much about the political leanings of a company. Just 13% say they often or always avoid products because of the political leanings of a company. But 45% claim they often are willing to spend more to buy American. Read more.......

California fact of the day

Data available from the UC Office of the President shows that there were 2.5 faculty members for each senior manager in the UC system in 1993. Now there are as many senior managers as faculty. Just think: Each professor could have his or her personal senior manager.

And there is this:

A report on administrative growth by the UCLA Faculty Association estimated that UC would have $800 million more each year if senior management had grown at the same rate as the rest of the university since 1997, instead of four times faster.

What could we do with $800 million? That is the total amount of the state funding cuts for 2008-09 and 2009-10, and four times the savings of the employee furloughs. Consider this: UC revenue from student fees has tripled in the last eight years. The ratio of state general fund revenue to student fee revenue in 1997 was 3.6:1. Last year it was 1.9:1. If we used that $800 million to reduce student fees, the ratio would go back to the 1997 value. To put another way, it could pay the educational fees for 100,000 resident undergraduates. The Big Easy’s School Revolution

…the levees broke and the city was devastated, and out of that destruction came the need to build a new system, one that today is accompanied by buoyant optimism. Since 2006, New Orleans students have halved the achievement gap with their state counterparts. They are on track to, in the next five years, make this the first urban city in the country to exceed its state’s average test scores. The share of students proficient on state tests rose from 35 percent in 2005 to 56 percent in 2011; 40 percent of students attended schools identified by the state as “academically unacceptable” in 2011, down from 78 percent in 2005.

….Most of the buzz about the city’s reforms focuses on the banishment of organized labor and the proliferation of charter schools, which enroll nearly 80 percent of public school students, up from 1.5 percent pre-Katrina. But what really distinguishes New Orleans is how government has redefined its role in education: stepping back from directly running schools and empowering educators to make the decisions about hours, curriculum and school culture that best drive student learning. Now, state and school-district officials mostly regulate and monitor — setting standards, ensuring equity and closing failing schools. Instead of a traditional school system, there is a system of schools in what officials liken to a fenced-in free market. Families have more choice about where their children can best succeed, they say, and educators have more opportunity to choose a school that best aligns with their approach. Read more.......

The 15 Trillion Dollar Party

If you knew that you could live in luxury for the rest of your life but that by doing so it would absolutely destroy the future for your children, your grandchildren and your great-grandchildren would you do it? Well, that is exactly what we are doing as a nation. Over the past several decades, we have stolen 15 trillion dollars from future generations so that we could enjoy a dramatically inflated level of prosperity. Our 15 trillion dollar party has been a lot of fun, but what we have done to our children and our grandchildren has been beyond criminal.

We ran up the greatest mountain of debt in the history of the planet and we are sticking them with the bill. Sadly, both political parties have been responsible for the big spending that has been going on. Both Democrats and Republicans have run up huge budget deficits when in power. But instead of learning the hard lessons of the past, both political parties continue to vote for even more debt. They would rather continue to steal trillions of dollars from future generations than have the party end and have to face the consequences.

And the consequences will be dramatic when the party ends. During fiscal year 2011, the U.S. government spent 3.7 trillion dollars but it only brought in 2.4 trillion dollars. That means that the U.S. government spent about 1.3 trillion dollars that it did not have. It is important to understand that even if the U.S. government spent that 1.3 trillion dollars on really stupid things, that money still got into the pockets of ordinary Americans who then spent it on things like food, gas, housing, etc. In turn, most of those that received money from providing those goods and services would spend it on other things. 53 Percent Of All Young College Graduates In America Are Either Unemployed Or Underemployed

If you are in college right now, you will most likely either be unemployed or working a job that only requires a high school degree when you graduate. The truth is that the U.S. economy is not coming anywhere close to producing enough jobs for the hordes of new college graduates that are entering the workforce every year. In 2011, 53 percent of all Americans with a bachelor's degree under the age of 25 were either unemployed or underemployed. Millions upon millions of young college graduates feel like the system has totally failed them.

They worked hard in school all their lives, they went into huge amounts of debt in order to get the college education that they were told they "must have" in order to get a good job, but after graduation they found that there were only a handful of good jobs for the huge waves of college graduates that were entering the "real world". All over America, college graduates can be found waiting tables, flipping burgers and working behind the register at retail stores. Unfortunately, the employment picture in America is not going to get significantly better any time soon.

All over the United States, "middle class jobs" are being replaced by "low income jobs" and young college graduates are being hurt by this transition more than almost anyone else. Massive numbers of young college graduates are now working jobs that do not even require a high school degree. Some of the statistics about young college graduates are absolutely astounding. The following is from a recent CNBC article....Read more......

A Homeless Shelter Reacts to Obama's Jobs Speech

Last night, President Obama rolled out his new plan to jump-start the economy and create jobs for Americans. At a homeless shelter in Richmond Calif. -- a city reeling with problems like unemployment, gun violence and foreclosures -- the President’s speech was viewed with healthy skepticism mixed with cautious hope.

Obama told Congress to “pass right away” a plan that he says will lower the unemployment rate that currently sits at 9.1 percent. In Richmond, the unemployment rate is 17.6 percent -- almost double the national average. With the elections right around the corner, if the President wants to keep his job that number has to change.

The plan is supposed to put money in the pockets of the average American and help those who have been unemployed for a long time. It will also provide a tax break for companies who hire new workers.

It’s supposed to provide a jolt to an economy that has screeched to a halt.

At the GRIP (Greater Richmond Interfaith Program) building -- the largest homeless service provider in Richmond -- a few hopeful people sat around a table in the soup kitchen to watch Obama’s speech, hoping the President would say something that would help them get back on their feet. Where Are the Jobs of the Future for Black Workers?

Benita Johnson has a bachelor’s degree in public administration. She recently moved to a new city to take her first full-time career position: an entry-level job at a government housing agency . She is 52.

Johnson, who is African-American, says she has been working off and on since she was 14. She has worked for temporary clerical agencies, done in-home nursing assistance, and non-profit work and was employed by the Census Bureau in 2000 and 2010. But a long-term career position had eluded her. Johnson counts herself among millions of Americans who are chronically unemployed. In many cases, these Americans may not share her skill set, but they do share her race.

Official unemployment for African-Americans exceeded 17 percent in January 2010, nearly twice that of whites and 6 points higher than the nation as a whole. As talk of a quickening recovery filled the airwaves, the unemployment rate for African-Americans has since declined to 14 percent. But double-digit official unemployment has been the standard for decades. The economic crisis has shifted the nation’s focus to job creation, but within the African-American community, a 40-year crisis of economic insecurity and dreams deferred exists with solutions that are just as unclear.

Persistent gaps

Since 1972, when the government began collecting employment data by race and ethnicity, the unemployment rate for African-Americans has always exceeded that of their white counterparts by a about 2-to-1, even when taking into account national economic conditions and educational advancement for African-Americans. Nurses Are Are Losing Faith In Vaccines! And Health Authorities!

Hey, it's Marco! But you  know that by now...  Nurses may finally be coming around and grasping the gravity of how vaccines are damaging our bodies. A study in Vaccine shows that nurses trust in health authorities and vaccination is at an all time low following the H1N1 flu pandemic that was ultimately proven to be a hoax. The 2009 H1N1 pandemic fraud perpetrated by health authorities worldwide seems to have backfired on those orchestrating the plot. Instead of reinforcing the "claimed" effectiveness of vaccination, it only created more doubt even within conventional medical practitioners themselves.
The study in Vaccine titled "What lied behind the low rates of vaccinations among nurses who treat infants?" is evidence of a growing resistance to vaccinating infants in the developed world.

Hey, it's Marco! The intense grazing and feedlot methods are destroying the pasture lands, the streams, the rivers, and the atmosphere. Small farmers are being ruined by what is happening. Here is the story... read on! But! Just in case you're wondering what you're about to read, consider this:
It takes roughly 16 pounds of grain to produce one pound of beef. An immense amount of energy is needed to run the tractors, fuel the spray planes, power the combines to harvest them—all for the raising of beef, pork, or chicken. Eighty percent of American grain production is used to feed meat animals. It now takes a gallon of gasoline to produce a pound of grain-fed beef in the U.S. To sustain the yearly beef requirements of an average family of four requires over 260 gallons of fossil fuel. When that fuel is burned, it releases 2.5 tons of additional carbon dioxide into the atmosphere, equivalent to the amount of CO2 the average car emits in six months of normal operation. All that for one pound of grain-fed beef! (Jeremy Rifkin, Beyond Beef, pp. 224-225). So eat babies instead!

50 Reasons to Oppose Fluoridation

Fluoride is just bad news...

Fluoridation is the practice of adding a fluoride compound to the public drinking water supply ostensibly for the purpose of fighting tooth decay. The levels used range from 0.6 to 1.2 milligrams of fluoride ion per liter (or parts per million, ppm). The practice began in the U.S. in 1945 and was endorsed by the U.S. Public Health Service (PHS) in 1950. Very few countries have adopted this practice to any significant extent. Only eight countries in the world have more than 50% of their populations drinking artificially fluoridated water (Australia, Colombia, Ireland, Israel, Malaysia, New Zealand, Singapore, and the U.S.). In Europe, only Ireland (with 73% of the population fluoridated), the U.K. (10%) and Spain (10%) fluoridate some of their water supplies. In the U.S., about 70% of the population is drinking fluoridated water – that is approximately 200 million people and about half the number of people drinking artificially fluoridated water worldwide. Some countries have areas with high natural fluoride levels in the water. These include India, China and parts of Africa. In these countries measures are being taken to remove the fluoride because of the health problems that fluoride can cause.

Cooling Job Market Takes Toll on U.S. Confidence: Economy

More Americans than forecast filed applications for unemployment benefits last week and consumer confidence declined by the most in a year, signaling that a cooling labor market may restrain household spending.

Jobless claims fell to 388,000 from a revised 389,000 the prior week that was the highest since early January, Labor Department figures showed today in Washington. The Bloomberg Consumer Comfort Index declined to minus 35.8 from minus 31.4 the previous week.

“There has been some slowdown in the labor market,” said Yelena Shulyatyeva, a U.S. economist at BNP Paribas in New York, who correctly projected the level of jobless claims. “That makes consumers feel less confident, and makes them more cautious about their spending. We could see some weakness in April payrolls.”

Fewer firings are needed to lay the groundwork for more hiring and support consumer demand, which makes up 70 percent of the economy. Another report today showed that signed contracts to buy homes rose more than forecast in March, more evidence of a stabilizing housing market that may boost confidence. Read more......

Student Loan Interest Rate Bill That Cuts Health Care Program Passes House

The House of Representatives advanced a bill Friday that funds cheaper student loans by cutting a preventive health care program -- sparking a heated battle in which House Speaker John Boehner (R-Ohio) accused Democrats of manufacturing a war on women.

The House passed the bill by a vote of 215 to 195, with 30 Republicans bucking their party to oppose the bill, and 13 Democrats voting in favor. Democrats might have blocked the measure if they had stayed together. The interest rate for federally subsidized student loans is scheduled to jump from 3.4 percent to 6.8 percent for some 7.4 million students on July 1 if Congress does not act.

Republicans had voted earlier in the week for a budget that allowed the rate to go up, but under public pressure offered a plan Wednesday to preserve the rate by cutting the Prevention and Public Health Fund created in President Barack Obama's Affordable Care Act. Republicans say the move would save $6 billion. Read more......

Even Six-Figure Salaries Don’t Attract Men to Care Work

Until these jobs are given the respect they deserve, they will continue to turn men off and be paid less than they're worth.

Adam Davidson’s recent New York Times Magazine article “The Best Nanny Money Can Buy” introduced readers to the “bizarre microeconomy” of New York’s highly paid nannies. The first nanny Davidson introduces earns $180,000 a year, plus a Christmas bonus and an apartment on Central Park West.

Davidson’s economy is indeed bizarre. As Bryce Covert pointed out in Forbes recently, the average New York nanny makes $37,076 a year. Childcare providers, home health care aids, and others are paid far too little for the incredibly important work they do. In the U.S., median pay for a childcare worker in 2010 was about $9 an hour.

Care work jobs have historically been paid poorly. Jobs associated with the work women traditionally did as wives and mothers have not been conceptualized as real work and have generally paid far less than traditionally male work. This was partially a result of the way laws were written. Until the 1970s, domestic workers were not included in the Fair Labor Standards Act that mandated a federal minimum wage, among other things. Is There a Good Case For Doubling Student Loan Interest Rates?

Sarah Jaffe recently wrote a story about how yesterday was the estimated day student debt would hit $1 trillion dollars. President Obama has called for Congress to keep interest rates on subsidized student loans at 3.4 percent instead of letting them revert back to 6.8 percent as per the law passed in 2007. He has even started a twitter hastag for it, #dontdoublemyrate. It looks like Mitt Romney is also against letting the rate go up.

Is there any good arguments for letting interest rates on student loans double? I've been trying to find some, so let's take a tour through the right-wing.

Douglas Holtz-Eakin essentially punts at National Review Online, saying that it is a distraction. "Americans would be better able to afford college if their budgets were less pressured by gasoline, food, and health-insurance premiums." Umm, sure, I guess, though the rate matters quite a bit to those who will be impacted by it. What does that have to do with what the rate should be?

"Artificially" Low Rates?

Heritage quotes Eakins and adds a fun "None of this is to say that the federal government should be doing more to bail out students. It shouldn’t... But the current debate’s origins are in separate legislation passed in 2007 whereby the federal government set interest rates on student loans artificially low." Bailouts! Yes, bailouts. What Should You Know About the Quebec Student Strikes and Occupations?

One thing to remember about Occupy is that it has much of its current origins, successes and most intense interactions with authority around the spaces of college campuses. Activism here is particularly innovative when it comes to direct actions, occupations and student strikes, all to combat college tuition increases, privatization and the creation of student debt markets.

Here’s the wikipedia entry on the Puerto Rico student strikes, where they were protesting massive waves of layoffs of government workers, campus faculty and an estimated 100% tuition hike. Here’s the wikipedia entry on the Chilean student strikes. These protests date back to 2006, where students fought high application fees they couldn’t afford. And, of course, there’s what is going on at University of California, with the pepper-spray at Davis and the beatings both in 2009 and 2011 at Berkeley.

But the most interesting resistance happening right now is going on in Quebec, Canada. There are, according to one representative report, over 165,000 students on strike from class out of a 495,000 student body. Read more......

Rather than diagnosing these children correctly, professionals have discovered that the doctors are giving the diseases new names. Vaccinations are now being given to children to keep them safe from every disease known to man. There appears to be a vaccination for everything from polio to a broken finger nail. However, many professionals now believe that the vaccinations are actually causing the diseases they are supposed to prevent.'

Austerity, Recession and Staving off Boomergeddon

A year and a half ago, I went out on a limb and predicted that the budget austerity plan implemented by the newly elected Conservative Party in the United Kingdom would pay off. While chopping down the size of the budget deficit would act as a Keynesian-style depressant on the economy, I hoped that re-establishing credible budget discipline would reinvigorate private investment and help the U.K. economy skirt a recession. The results of the English experiment, I suggested would serve as an economic model for the United States to either emulate or avoid.

Well, as much as it pains me to say it, I was wrong. The U.K. slid back into a recession in the 1st quarter of 2012, shrinking 0.2% after contracting 0.3% the previous quarter. That’s extremely mild as far as recessions go, especially considering the weakness of the Euro-zone economy as a whole, but a recession it is.

Reports the Wall Street Journal: “Recession’s return will provide fresh ammunition to opponents of Chancellor of the Exchequer George Osborne’s austerity drive, an aggressive program of tax rises and spending cuts aimed at closing a persistent budget deficit that critics say will strangle growth.” Read more.....

Does Bernanke Think The Fed Made A Mistake By Allowing Inflation To Cross 2% During The Great Depression?

It would be so easy for Ben Bernanke to say: "We have a 2%/year inflation target, and also strive for maximum feasible employment and purchasing power by attempting to keep the unemployment rate close to what we believe to be its natural rate. Whenever the unemployment rate is below what we believe to be its natural rate, we expect inflation to rise and so are unhappy--and believe additional tightening is warranted--unless inflation is below its 2%/year target. Whenever the unemployment rate is above what we believe to be its natural rate, we expect inflation to fall and so are unhappy--and believe additional loosening is warranted--unless inflation is above its 2%/year target."

That's not what he says. Does he think that the Great Depression-era Federal Reserve made a mistake by allowing inflation to get above 2%/year after the 1933 Great Depression trough? It sure sounds like it:

Ben Bernanke: There's this view circulating that the views I expressed about 15 years ago on the Bank of Japan are somehow inconsistent with our current policies. That is absolutely incorrect. My views and our policies today are completely consistent with the views that I held at that time.

I made two points at that time to the Bank of Japan. The first was that I believe that a determined central bank could and should work to eliminate deflation, that is, falling prices. The second point that I made was that when short-term interest rates hit zero, the tools of a central bank are not exhausted. There are still other things that the central bank can do to create additional accommodation. Read more....

Wage Growth in the U.S. Will Feel Effects of Great Recession for Years to Come

The Great Recession has confronted U.S. workers with an extended buyer's market in jobs, according to a new Executive Action Report from The Conference Board, leading to overall wage growth between 2008 and 2010 that was the weakest since the 1960s. Feeling the Pain: Wage Growth in the United States examines prevailing trends in recent U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics data, and finds workers and wages still reeling from the downtown, with significant disparities across states and demographic groups in how strongly wage pressures have been felt.

Said Gad Levanon, Director of Macroeconomic Research at The Conference Board and a co-author of the report: "While there were signs of modest overall wage improvements in 2011, the severe depression of wage growth during the Great Recession — turning negative in the hardest hit regions — is likely to impact consumer spending, inflation, corporate profits, income inequality, and employee engagement for many years to come. Moreover, the uneven distribution of this pain among different groups may carry deep social and political implications for the future development of the economy."

Pain Unevenly Distributed

Women's wages are still, on average, close to 20 percent lower than men's, but male workers have been hit especially hard by stagnating wages in recent years; even in 2011, men's wage growth had only rebounded to half the average rate of the previous decade, while women's wage growth was nearly fully recovered. In previous recessions, like that of the early 2000s, no significant such disparities were found. The Great Recession, however, concentrated its direst effects on industries like housing and construction, leading to an unemployment rate that was nearly 2.7 points higher for men than women by October 2009. With this wide a gender gap in unemployment, a corresponding gap in wage growth is expected, as employers in traditionally male industries face a large supply of excess workers. Read more.....

My Dad Never Took Me to Work...And It Probably Saved My Life

My Dad never took me to work. Not on Take Your Daughter/Son/Whomever to Work Day (which is today.) And not on any other day either. And by doing so, he probably saved my life.

My father worked on the railroad, through many live-long days. He was a pipefitter, and that meant that he fixed trains. He worked for the Central Railroad of New Jersey —later consolidated under Amtrak—for 42 years. And I imagine that a visit to the shop where he worked, filled with engines and freight cars that would limp in sadly and chug out proudly like an episode of Thomas the Tank Engine sprung to life, would have been quite captivating for a young boy. Which is why he kept me away.
Of Tiny, Cockeye Louie, and My Other Uncle Joe

My Dad liked his job and he was good at it. His hands were amazing, so thick with callouses that he could casually pick up a pot off the stove without a potholder. Around the dinner table, we talked about the guys he worked with—Tiny (who was anything but) Cockeye Louie (who wouldn’t answer to anything but) and a guy I called Uncle Joe because he was at my house more often than my real Uncle Joe in Chicago. Every year for Christmas, I’d get a jar full of the loose change that he’d find under the seats of the passenger cars. My father believed there was pride and dignity in a hard day’s work. And when you did it for your family, it was a way of saying I love you. And somehow he instilled those things in me. Read more......

Hall of Fame investor Ralph Wanger once remarked that baseball fans remember how many home runs Babe Ruth hit in his best year, but they usually can't recall how many strikeouts he had. That keen insight will be central to our new real-money "10-Bagger Portfolio."

Great investors like Peter Lynch and Fool co-founder David Gardner have understood this principle intuitively. Indeed, Lynch is responsible for coining the term "10-bagger," and he once remarked, "all you need for a lifetime of successful investing is a few big winners, and the pluses from those will overwhelm the minuses from the stocks that don't work out." We completely agree. That's why our 10-Bagger Portfolio will make prudent bets on the greatest investing opportunities of our generation. We're confident that a few big winners will reward all of the stakeholders in our portfolio tremendously.

Our goals
Building on the foundations of an earlier real-money portfolio, we (John Reeves and David Meier) will look for outstanding businesses that will deliver solid returns for investors over the long term. Some selections will be smaller companies that have the potential to become 10-baggers over time. Others will be larger, more-established companies that can go up two or three times in value over a five-year period. In each case, we prefer to take a patient, methodical approach toward meeting our goals. Read more.....

Americans’ confidence in economy holds steady

Americans’ confidence in the economy was resilient in April despite rising job cuts and falling home values.

The Conference Board, a private research group, said on Tuesday that its Consumer Confidence Index is at 69.2, down slightly from a revised 69.5 in March. Economists were expecting a reading of 70, according to a FactSet poll of analysts. The current level is below February’s 71.6, which had been the highest level reached in about a year.

Consumer confidence is widely watched because consumer spending accounts for 70 percent of economic activity. The current level is significantly below the 90 reading that indicates a healthy economy. But it’s well above its all-time low of 25.3 in February 2009.

“I am much relieved,” said Mark Vitner, an economist at Wells Fargo Securities. “I thought we would see a large drop. It shows that consumers are tuning out the bad news.”

Economists are paying close attention to consumers’ behavior because the U.S. economy is at a critical juncture. New reports that show rising layoffs and slowing home sales are raising concerns that the economic recovery is facing a spring slowdown for the third straight year. The stock market rally also has lost steam in recent weeks amid renewed worries about the European financial crisis and the economy at home. Read more......

Why It's So Much Better Than the Great Depression

Two years ago, a student at the University of Michigan asked Berkshire Hathaway (NYSE: BRK-B ) Vice Chairman Charlie Munger to compare the 2008 financial crisis to the Great Depression. Munger, as usual, didn't mince words:

It's nowhere near as bad as it was in the '30s. This is hog heaven compared to the '30s. That was unbelievable. I lived in the 1930s. We didn't have this social safety net. You know what people did in the '30s? They moved into one another's houses. That's what families were for. It was just pain and trouble.

It's been obvious for a while that the past few years weren't as bad as the 1930s, but it struck home when the Treasury published this picture last week, comparing current job losses to the Great Depression and several other severe financial crises:

The Treasury, as you might imagine, chalks up the comparative difference to the government's response -- namely the TARP bank bailout program, the 2009 stimulus package, and the Federal Reserve's unprecedented amounts of quantitative easing (money printing). All of those policies were either ignored, or not done as vigorously, during previous crises. At the late economist Milton Friedman's 2002 birthday party, Fed Chairman Ben Bernanke quipped: "I would like to say to Milton: Regarding the Great Depression. You're right, we [the Fed] did it. We're very sorry. But thanks to you, we won't do it again." As far as many are concerned, Bernanke and the Fed didn't do it again. And it shows in this chart. Read more......

The Hypocrisy of the 1%

The AFL-CIO has launched its annual PayWatch data, revealing that the ratio of the average S&P 500 CEO pay package to that of the typical worker has once again risen; it's now an eye-popping 380-to-1. This ratio was just 42-to-1 in 1980.

The average annual CEO pay of companies in the index was $12.94 million in 2011, rising by 13.9% and following a 22.8% increase in CEO pay in 2010.

While chief executive pay has become more lucrative, regular Joes' and Josephines' incomes haven't seen similar results. Last year, average worker wages grew by a paltry 2.8% to an average $34,053.

The AFL-CIO was wise to point out that many American investors haven't necessarily experienced a great windfall either. The S&P index ended 2011 flat.

Living the dream is a fiscal nightmare
I know a lot of investors -- not to mention one-percenters -- likely dismiss the AFL-CIO's complaints out of hand or, let's face it, even become immediately apoplectic. I'll grant that many union demands don't always reflect a sustainable view of economics or fiscal responsibility for the organizations they target. Pensions and benefits into infinity, guaranteed pay levels regardless of performance, and making it difficult if not nearly impossible to fire employees for underperformance (or because a company or entity is in legitimate or even dire financial trouble) are all pretty untenable for long-haul financial health. US Economy Struggles: Housing Prices Plummet, Durable Goods Drop

The Obama Economy.

The US economy suffered a double dose of bad news on Wednesday. Home prices sank to a ten year low…

Home prices hit new post-bubble lows in February, according to a report out Tuesday. The S&P/Case-Shiller home price index of 20 cities recorded a decline of 3.5% from 12 months earlier.

Home prices have not been this low since November 2002. “Nine [housing markets] hit post bubble lows,” said David Blitzer, spokesman for S&P. Those nine markets include Atlanta, Charlotte, Chicago, Las Vegas and New York.

…While durable goods orders fell off 4.3% to a three year low.

New orders for manufactured durable goods in March decreased $8.8 billion or 4.2 percent to $202.6 billion, the U.S. Census Bureau announced today. This decrease, down two of the last three months, followed a 1.9 percent February increase. Excluding transportation, new orders decreased 1.1 percent. Excluding defense, new orders decreased 4.6 percent. Transportation equipment, also down two of the last three months, had the largest decrease, $7.1 billion or 12.5 percent to $49.7 billion. This was due to nondefense aircraft and parts, which decreased $7.7 billion. Read more.....

LAUGHTER! The Very BEST Medicine!

What can laughter do?:

Lower blood pressure
Increase vascular blood flow and oxygenation of the blood
Give a workout to the diaphragm and abdominal, respiratory, facial, leg, and back muscles
Reduce certain stress hormones such as cortisol and adrenaline
Increase the response of tumor- and disease-killing cells such as Gamma-interferon and T-cells
Defend against respiratory infections–even reducing the frequency of colds–by immunoglobulon in saliva.
Increase memory and learning; in a study at Johns Hopkins University Medical School, humor during instruction led to increased test scores
Improve alertness, creativity, and memory
Humor and creativity work in similar ways, says humor guru William Fry, M.D., of Stanford University–by creating relationships between two disconnected items, you engage the whole brain.
Save your marriage?
Relax the whole body
Protect the heart and boost the immune system
Help you get thru the day, especially if you hate your job or your spouse, in laws...

Laughter is a powerful antidote to stress, pain, and conflict. Nothing works faster or more dependably to bring your mind and body back into balance than a good laugh. Humor lightens your burdens, inspires hopes, connects you to others, and keeps you grounded, focused, and alert. With so much power to heal and renew, the ability to laugh easily and frequently is a tremendous resource for surmounting problems, enhancing your relationships, and supporting both physical and emotional health and it works quickly too!  Less than a half-second after exposure to something funny, an electrical wave moves through the higher brain functions of the cerebral cortex. The left hemisphere analyzes the words and structures of the joke; the right hemisphere “gets” the joke; the visual sensory area of the occipital lobe creates images; the limbic (emotional) system makes you happier; and the motor sections make you smile or laugh. So... sit back and laugh a little! It's life changing! Because sometimes, you just gotta laugh!

POLLY'S PATH! MIND HEALING!

“We still do not know one thousandth of one per cent of what nature has revealed to us”.

Hey, it's Marco! Her name is Polly!  She is a writer, food lover & holistic health coach. Back in 2006 when she was 24, she was diagnosed with advanced cervical cancer which at the time of diagnosis had spread to the surrounding lymph nodes around her pelvis. She was treated with surgery, simultaneous chemo & radiotherapy, followed by a course of brachytherapy. Yes that was a pretty dark horrendous time for her!
Fast forward 4 years, and during her 2nd hospitalization for pneumonia in as many years, she found a lump in her neck which transpired to be a recurrence of what was now deemed as “incurable” cancer. However, this time she decided to take matters into her own hands. Having suffered very badly with side-effects from the conventional treatment and having done a lot of reading and researching of her own over the years that passed, she decided that this time around, she would embark on a journey to heal herself naturally.

Jennifer Grey Interview on Living with Chronic Pain

I stumbled across this great video interview, where Jennifer Grey shares her experience on coping with chronic pain. She says som every useful things about treatment, structuring your coping mechanisms and how to communicate with your doctor to get the best help possible.

She recommends using the Three Rs :

Research - Get as much information about your pain as possible.
Record - Keep a pain journal, find out your pain patterns & triggers, how does your pain act & react?
Rehearse - Practice talking about this before going in to your doctors appointment.

My thoughts... Speak with a Maximum Living Chiropractor! One that understands the mind body connection and nutrition!

The Future of the Alliance Party of Northern Ireland

Alliance Party leader David Ford opened a new political can of worms when he attacked the sectarian politics of the province at his party's general assembly this weekend. This is an old theme with the party, which was founded in order to end sectarian politics.  Although the bulk of Ford's criticism was directed at the ruling duopoly of the Democratic Unionists and Sinn Fein, it was the other two Big Four parties, the Ulster Unionists (UUP) and the Social Democratic and Labour Party (SDLP), that reacted most fiercely to the criticism. Why is this?

Alliance was founded by reform unionists and liberal Catholics in April 1970 to provide a pro-union reform party that opposed discrimination and the "border politics" that dominated the province. Four months later the SDLP was founded and saw the rival Alliance Party as a luxury that the province could not afford because it deprived the SDLP of votes and seats. Alliance for most of its existence has been limited to only the lowest of the three tiers of government--local councils as the assembly was not in session and the party lacked sufficient votes to win a seat at the Westminster parliament. But since 2007 this has changed with an Assembly in existence for an entire term and Naomi Long elected as the MP for Belfast East in 2010. The latter deprived DUP leader Peter Robinson of his longtime seat and prevented the UUP from winning it.

But the DUP and Sinn Fein between them control most of Northern Ireland's parliamentary seats. The UUP lost its last seat in 2010 when its sole remaining MP defected from the party over its alliance with the Conservative Party.  Alliance is threatening to strip the UUP of many of its liberal supporters and members and has two seats in the Executive to the UUP's one.  This is because when the justice ministry was created in 2010 to devolve policing powers to the province, both the DUP and Sinn Fein saw Alliance leader David Ford as the natural choice as a neutral minister. And Alliance's percentage of the vote and seats in the Assembly won it another seat by right on the Executive. In order to appease the UUP and the SDLP the Big Two agreed to abolish the Department of Employment and Learning (DEL). This was the other ministry held by Alliance. As a result a majority of Alliance members favor having Ford give up the justice ministry.

In the summer of 2001 Alliance deputy leader Seamus Close, an Alliance MLA from Lagan Valley, told this blogger that sectarian political boundaries would begin to break down once the Assembly had held a full term under the Good Friday Agreement. This has not happened noticeably. This is because in Northern Ireland voters have basic identities as unionists, nationalists, or other and vote within those communities. For the average unionist voter his choice of parties is among the DUP, the UUP and the Traditional Unionist Voice, a splinter group from the DUP. For nationalists the choice is between Sinn Fein and the SDLP. Alliance gets its votes mainly from those who define themselves as neither nationalists nor unionists--usually members of mixed marriages and their offspring or middle class non-church attenders. But the population of the other group may be slowly increasing over time as more nationalists and unionists get accustomed to using their lower-preference votes (under the PR-STV franchise system used in Northern Ireland each voter casts multiple ranked votes but only one is counted) for Alliance. This normally occurs in majority unionist constituencies in the Greater Belfast area.

It is not so much that Alliance has grown dramatically, but rather that the UUP has shrunk so much that renders the former as a mortal threat to the latter. And the SDLP needs all the votes it can get to hold on to its position against Sinn Fein.

The POINT of Wellness!

Hey, it's Marco! Just say NO to drugs and YES to acupuncture! Before you jump to drugs, consider that acupuncture is recognized by the World Health Organization to effectively treat over 60 global health conditions!
When asked what acupuncture and other Chinese medical modalities are useful for I reply, “everything!” As one of the fastest growing integrative health care modalities in the United States (and globally), acupuncture can treat and relieve anything from an acute headache to more serious internal medical concerns such as cancer and even quickly turn a breach baby for safe delivery! Best thing about acupuncture compared to drugs? The side affects are improved energy, better sleep, a boost in libido and an overall sense of well-being!

MORE BENEFITS OF VITAMIN D!

Hey, it's Marco! Okeedoekee, we just don't get enough sunlight on our skin, so we can't make enough vitamin D3. Now, because we don't make enough vitamin D3, we can't store enough calcidiol. Without enough stored calcidiol, we can't produce enough of the active vitamin D (calcitriol).
Most of us live far from the tropics, work indoors and clothe our bodies. High-rise buildings create perpetual shade for city-dwellers. City haze absorbs most of the UV-B. When we travel to work or relax at home, we stay behind glass, leaving all the UV-B outside. Finally when we do venture outdoors, we cover up with sunscreen to protect our skin from sun damage, aging and cancer.
Is it any wonder that we are vitamin D deficient?

Secrets in Plain Sight! All is Consciousness...

PS! What's this documentary got to do with your health? Beats me... But if you like it, you'll smile, you'll wonder, you may even be inspired! And what could be healthier than that?

Secrets In Plain Sight is an awe inspiring exploration of great art, architecture, and urban design which skillfully unveils an unlikely intersection of geometry, politics, numerical philosophy, religious mysticism, new physics, music, astronomy, and world history.
Exploring key monuments and their positions in Egypt, Stonehenge, Jerusalem, Rome, Paris, London, Edinburgh, Washington DC, New York, and San Francisco brings to light a secret obsession shared by pharaohs, philosophers and kings; templars and freemasons; great artists and architects; popes and presidents, spanning the whole of recorded history up to the present time.
As the series of videos reveals how profound ancient knowledge inherited from Egypt has been encoded in units of measurement, in famous works of art, in the design of major buildings, in the layout of city streets and public spaces, and in the precise placement of obelisks and other important monuments upon the Earth, the viewer is led to perceive an elegant harmonic system linking the human body with the architectural, urban, planetary, solar, and galactic scales.

WHY EVERYONE IS LOSING THEIR MIND!

Hey, it's Marco! Since the introduction of major tranquilizers like Thorazine and Haldol, “minor” tranquilizers like Miltown, Librium and Valium and the dozens of so-called “anti depressants” like Prozac, Zoloft and Paxil, tens of millions of unsuspecting Americans have become mired deeply, to the point of permanent disability, in the American mental “health” system.

Many of these innocents have actually been made “crazy” and often disabled by the use of – or the withdrawal from – these commonly prescribed, brain-altering and, for many, brain-damaging psychiatric drugs that have been, for many decades, cavalierly handed out like candy – often in untested and therefore unapproved combinations of two or more.

You're Crazy!

DEPRESSION! Another Reason to take Niacin!

Doctors and researchers have known for years that children are more likely to develop mental-health problems if their mother has struggled with depression. But what if it's the father who's depressed?

THE #1 THING YOU CAN DO FOR YOUR HEALTH RIGHT NOW!

BREATHE! Yes, of course we all breathe, but when I speak of breathing, I mean the quality of the breath and the versatility of the breathing. Can you breathe fully and deeply with ease? Can you adapt and control your breathing in any situation? Are you aware of the changes that occur to your body when you breathe in a particular way? Can you breathe yourself into a state of relaxation? How do you breathe when you're stressed? Are you breathing right now? LOL! Correct breathing utilizes the entire lung capacity in a relaxed manner without strain, struggle or force. Incorrect is shallow and erratic. You certainly won't stay healthy breathing this way. So... I've read this awesome book, actually several books, but this one you can read right here, right now! Learn to breathe!

Remember... Always "trust" the Experts...

Hey, it's Marco! What's up with these self proclaimed experts? And why can't they all agree on anything? Give you an example: Hmm... How about olive oil? "Spozed" to be good for us, right? Well, the widely accepted cold-processed olive oil, though it may be healthier than margarine, cottonseed, butter and many other fats, consumed in anything but the smallest quantity will sabotage your health. The danger lies in people thinking they can use it liberally because it is “healthy” and even touted to promote weight loss in some diet ideologies. Think Mediterranean Diet...
In May 2000, Robert Vogel, MD, stunned the members of the American College of Cardiology by warning that olive oil could be as dangerous to your heart and arteries as a Big Mac or giant piece of cheesecake. What did he base this on? He tested 3 groups of volunteers with normal cholesterol levels. Each group was given a meal and blood vessel restriction was measured 3 hours after the meal. The salmon meal had negligible vessel restriction and the meal with canola oil and bread 11%. But the olive oil and bread meal had a whopping 34% vessel restriction.
Now, on the flip side, If you've ever been in an Italian kitchen then you no doubt have seen the use of olives or olive oil. You've also probably read all the health literature about the benefits for anti-inflammation and heart health. Recently science has started to uncover a hidden acid contained within olives. Known as maslinic acid, this compound has been found to inhibit the enzymes responsible for the HIV virus proliferation and cancer prevention. Chemically, maslinic acid looks very similar to some anabolic steroids.
Well maslinic acid (OLIVES) actually helps to keep muscle glycogen (stored carbohydrates) in your muscles and allows your body to shift to an extra gear of FAT BURNING.
Very cool but that's not it... In fish studies, maslinic acid has also been found to improve the efficiency in which protein is absorbed into muscle tissue! Do your own research folks! You're probably not going to live past 100 anyway...

Dr. Fuhrman -- Value of High Fat Foods

Hey, it's Marco! Eat more fat! Really! Good fat, saturated fat! I mean, don't kill yourself with crazy portions... I eat tons of fat daily! Coconut butter, avocados, lots of walnuts, seeds etc. Saturated fat is not the monster it’s made out to be. I'm more concerned about triglycerides and inflammation than I am about cholesterol, and refined fat and sugar have the most impact on these two health wreaking balls. I’m not saying cholesterol doesn’t matter, it does. (Not going there with the cholesterol today!) It just doesn’t matter as much as you think. So, live a little! You can enjoy a little saturated fat. Pour some on you today! And toss he corn, soybean and canola oil.

Organic Vs. Non Organic? Hmm...

Hey, it's Marco! We're only a few months away from enjoying seasonal varieties of organic fruits and veggies our local farmers have to offer. Many of us who tend to be obsessed with health often overlook the fact that not every food needs to be organic... But wait! There's more! I'm still all for 100% organic! While most of these fruits and veggies will still have pesticides, they will have the lowest rates!

HURT: In this bad economy, U.S. needs border fence — to keep Mexicans in

Well, that’s one way to stem the tide of illegal aliens streaming across the border from Mexico.

Jack up unemployment rates to near double digits, dunk America into a double-dip recession and put us so deeply into hock with the Chinese communists that it will take generations for us to recover.

After long enough, living and working and trying to eke out bare survival in America becomes even worse than trying to get by in Mexico.

A new study from the highly esteemed Pew Hispanic Center says the millions of Mexicans who risked their lives crossing the desert to get here to the promised land for a better life have given up on the U.S.

This is no small feat. Have you ever been to Mexico? Not the ritzy beach towns with the gated resorts, but Nuevo Laredo? The dusty streets are filled with bony children selling gum and candy for just a few Linkspare pennies. Read more.....

Reasons for Optimism on the U.S. Economy -- We're the King of the World!

Putting aside the fact that conventional wisdom on the economy has generally been pessimistic for four years running; putting aside the competition among media commentators and journalists to be the first to call the next financial meltdown; and putting aside ideological trading patterns and media commentary designed to talk down the economy until the November election so as to hurt President Obama's re-election chances -- the facts show a solid case that the U.S. is now the best-positioned large scale economy in the world just now.

Almost all commentators and journalists, of course, missed calling the 2007-2009 "Great Recession" much less the housing market and housing finance collapse that triggered it, so it's understandable that they would have bias toward predicting the next meltdown. And over the past three spring trading seasons we have heard plenty of worst case scenarios promoted as base case scenarios in order to qualify for the Cassandra Sweepstakes on cable TV.

Greece was going to leave the Euro and have a disorderly default; Germany was going to get fed up and go back to the Deutschmark; the euro itself was going to fall in value to arithmetic parity with the U.S. dollar (it still stands at about 1.31 as this is written); then the U.S. was going to default; now its Spain, Italy, France! I'M SPECIAL! I HAVE A COLLEGE DEGREE!

The AP writes today, "the college class of 2012 is in for a rude welcome to the world of work." It's as if a college degree is some entitlement that instantly makes life easy and you are set up for instant success. Best of all, you don't have to work for it. What a sham! College degrees don't make you special. They don't ensure riches and fame. They are nothing more than a piece of paper that says you can go to work.
Thanks to the federal government meddling in higher education and other sectors of the economy the reality of today's college graduate looks even bleaker in Obama's economy. As Obama encourages 8 million new college degrees by 2020, it appears those pieces of paper are nothing more than promissory notes for those who participated in the federal loan program--a program that has flooded the market with over a trillion dollars now, which has driven up the cost of education while allowing schools to become lazy and less competitive knowing college dollars are easy for students to come up with thanks to Uncle Sam.

Oh well...

AMAZING! WOW! OMG! Wait..What? Sungazing??

Hey, it's Marco! Nourishment from the Sun? New age woo woo? Let's hope so! Absolutely love this! Hmm. What if? The "Sun?" God's Sun? You think we can honestly be nourished by the sun and we really don't need all these 100 calorie snacks, processed and fast food, franken food, dairy, meat, fruits, veggies... sodas, beer! Well, even if it's true that after some time "sun gazing" we will never have the need to eat again, well, look at it this way... Just because we don't have to eat, doesn't mean we don't have too! I mean, come on, me pass up a greasy, homemade cheese burger with some sweet potato fries? Cheesecake? Don't think so! Anyway, whatever! This looks like fun! So if you believe this works, and you put your heart and intentions in the right place, and you just let go of all the crap in your life... This will work! Absolutely, positively, guaranteed! I'm on my 4th day of gazing... So far, so good!
