On November 4, 2011 Congresswoman Jackie Speier, D-Calif., and eight of her Democratic colleagues ended their week-long "food stamp challenge." During the challenge, the congresspeople maintained a $4.50-per-day food budget to better understand the situation of those in the food stamp program, which delivers an average weekly benefit of $32.59. (The program was officially renamed the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, or SNAP, in 2004.)

"There are a lot of myths associated with food stamps," including "the argument that it is rife with fraud" and the idea that beneficiaries are shiftless, said Speier. "Many of those who are on food stamps are the working poor. I really feel strongly that unless we walk in the shoes of someone on food stamps, we have no idea. I had no idea, I really didn't." FTC has asked the foul debt collection agencies to stop business

Federal Trade Commission (FTC) has filed lawsuits against nearly 30 collection agencies across the nation. FTC has been forced to take legal action against the collectors creating unnecessary financial distress upon the cash-strapped consumers. It is reported that FTC has registered a legal complaint against a California based debt collection agency in October 2011. This particular collection agency has given false threats to the consumers and thereby broken the FDCPA laws.

FTC has registered a case against a California based debt collection agency for violating the FDCPA laws. The district court has ordered the collection agency to cease their business at the special request of the FTC.

The FTC officials claim that the collection agency has broken the FDCPA laws deliberately. They have given empty threats to the consumers. The collectors have threatened to take the consumers to court if the debts were not paid. Moreover, they told that the consumers would be put into the jail if the bills remained unpaid. The surprising fact is most of these consumers didn’t owe a penny to the collection agency.

The collectors have violated several laws of the FDCPA Act. They have asked the consumers to pay several fees that don’t exist in the country. The collectors have even represented themselves as attorneys working at the courts to scare the consumers. Read more....

Middle Class America is dying

Work has been extremely hard to find here in American for the middle class, and especially the IT industry. It used to be that we could jump from job to job, but then all of a sudden, companies quit updating the IT department and software and also did not start any new projects. The Department of Defense run out of government grants to do projects, and millions of people have lost their jobs since Bush was "elected" into office. People who used to make around $60k and up are now losing their homes and have credit cards charged to the max trying to survive.

Today I went over to Safeway and I was absolutely appalled at the prices. I honestly don't know how most families make it these days. I ended up paying over 140 dollars for about two-thirds of a cart of food. That was after I "saved" 67 dollars on sale items.

When the cost of the basic things that we need - housing, food, gas, electricity - go up faster than our incomes do, that means that we are getting poorer. Read more....
